Sauk Mtn. Suite
![]() |
It was a glorious evening in the "Skagit Country" of the North, whereupon we (Mark Boyle and I) headed up the mountain called Sauk near the small hamlet of Rockport.
It had been a spur of the moment trek and we didn't
arrive at the trailhead until well after 6:00 PM. But with a clear-blue sky
pending and a full moon due up, we didn't hesitate in thought that we might be
getting home pretty late if indeed we reached the summit, and then had to return
possibly in the dark. With a full head of steam and mountain dreams, we headed
up...in the constant flagrance floating thru the air of blooming wildflowers:
columbine, tiger lily, glacier lily and the like. The views were grand
especially to the North as we rounded the corner of Sauk...Baker, Shuksan,
Eldorado. We encounter only a few hikers descending and once we reached the
mountain top, we were alone with the evening hue and view 'cept for the
occasional bird twitting here and there and the marmots chattering below. Sauk
Lake appeared like a giant jewel far below, like an emerald among
stones.
Here, we were once again connected to the "Alpine Country" and
the light (even though waning) that filled the world. It was a good light and we
toasted to it with drink (water and gator aid). The cameras clicked away as is
our pose up high...can't never get enough it nor would I want to. And talk of
wishing to stay here forever filled the air. But alas, as humans we had to
retreat to realm from which we had come, and slowly we began our descent,
sometimes talking, sometimes not. Upon our arrival back at Mark's truck, we were
greeted with a nice sunset over the Twin Sisters Range and then a upcoming full
moon...Sauk Mtn. Suite.
