There in a little cleft of rocks
and sand thereupon the river gravel bar,
Lay rather a unique looking stone
dissimilar from ones I'd seen afar.
Tho only a stone, its granite was molded by eons of river and
foam,
And there was power and
energy in it from its eternal roam.
Now, in my hand I hold this
stone,
And swallow strength from
the earth to the marrow of my bone.
How glad I be to walk this zone,
Giving thanks to all the
splendor that is . . . in earth-like home.
Native American Indians believe that the earth is all powerful, that the Creator breathed life into all things. When some Indians pray to their maker, they hold a stone in their hand symbolizing the strength of the earth and all that it be. When I grasp my prayer stone in the palm of my hand, I can feel the strength of the earth to the depths of my soul.
