I was awe-struck when the sun came up and cast its rays upon the great mountain called Koma Kulshan (Mt. Baker), which befit the goddess of dawn, Aurora. And from where I had bivouacked in the last patch of heather amid the stark-gray granite rock, nothing seemed more sublime. For a time, I felt as the wolf is to the wild or once like the Lakota upon the great plains: utterly free in roam and spirit . . .
